The former U.S. Ambassador warns that clan divisions pose a threat to peace and stability in Somalia.

Larry André, the former U.S. Ambassador to Somalia from February 2022 to May 2023, has warned that clan rivalry and internal political conflicts are major obstacles to achieving lasting peace and stability in Somalia.

In an interview with The Washington Post, André cited the election-related violence that occurred in 2022 as a clear example, describing it as a significant threat to the country’s stability.

“Despite efforts to promote Somali unity, the persistent influence of clan divisions continues to endanger progress toward peace and stability in Somalia,” said the former U.S. ambassador.

The former ambassador expressed concern that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is focusing heavily on internal political maneuvers, which has distracted from addressing the threats of terrorism and building a unified government.

André’s remarks come at a critical juncture for Somalia, as the country faces upcoming elections and ongoing security challenges posed by Al-Shabaab.

The United States, a key ally, has voiced concern over Somalia’s weak political strategy—especially amid the escalating tensions surrounding the electoral process.
