The Somali community across North America has warmly welcomed the federal government’s decision to reappoint Mahad Mohamed Salad as Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), commending President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his cabinet for what they described as a bold and visionary step toward national stability and progress.
In a statement issued by community leaders, diaspora organizations, and civic advocates, Somali-Americans praised President Mohamud’s leadership for prioritizing national security, rule of law, and human rights by placing a trusted and capable figure at the helm of the country’s intelligence service.
“We congratulate Mr. Mahad Salad on his return to NISA and express our full support for his renewed leadership,” the statement read. “His unwavering commitment to building a secure, prosperous, and inclusive Somalia gives hope not only to citizens within the country but also to Somalis around the world who long for peace and justice in their homeland.”
The community lauded Mahad’s track record of institutional reform and transparent governance, highlighting his prior achievements in drafting the National Intelligence and Security Law, a milestone in redefining the agency’s legal mandate in alignment with democratic principles and human rights. His firm stance on protecting the dignity and rights of Somali citizens was noted as a key reason for the widespread confidence in his leadership.
Community leaders emphasized that Mahad’s reappointment sends a powerful message to both the Somali public and international partners: that Somalia is serious about building credible institutions and nurturing a culture of accountability. They also pointed to his broader vision for a secure and thriving nation—one that welcomes development, attracts tourism, and provides opportunities for its youth and returning diaspora.
“Mahad Salad is not only a seasoned intelligence leader but also a champion of human rights and democratic values,” said Dr. Abdulkadir Ali, a prominent Somali-American civic organizer based in Milwaukee. “We believe his leadership will help guide Somalia through these critical times and lay the foundation for long-term peace and prosperity.”
In addition, the North American Somali community reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s development, calling on fellow diaspora members to engage more actively in rebuilding efforts and contribute their expertise to national recovery. They also urged the federal government to continue appointing principled and professional leaders who put the interests of the Somali people first.
As Mahad assumes leadership at NISA once again, he carries not only the confidence of the Somali government but also the hopes of a global Somali population eager to see their nation rise above conflict and reclaim its place as a peaceful and respected member of the international community.
