Somalia’s Political Opposition Forms a New Alliance: A Path to Reform or Just a Power Struggle?

MUDUGPOST -A new political alliance has emerged among Somalia’s opposition leaders, aiming to challenge the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This coalition brings together former officials, influential politicians, and civil society figures who express growing concern over the direction of the current government, especially in regard to the electoral process and constitutional reforms.

The opposition claims to present a strong, organized alternative with a vision to reshape Somalia’s political landscape. However, a pressing question remains: Are these individuals truly offering solutions to Somalia’s longstanding crises—or simply eyeing the presidential seat for their own gain?

There is a growing perception among the public that this alliance may not differ significantly from the current leadership. Many of its prominent members have held power before and were involved in previous political turmoil. As such, critics argue that their efforts might be less about reform and more about reclaiming influence and authority.

What the Somali people demand now is clarity: How will this opposition coalition handle issues of security, economic recovery, and public welfare? What makes them distinct from President Hassan Sheikh’s government? Will they deliver transparency, good governance, and stability?

Time will be the true judge of whether this newly formed alliance offers a credible and constructive alternative—or if it simply contributes to the ongoing cycle of political power struggles that have plagued Somalia for decades.
