President Supports Palestinian Cause, Welcomes Lifting of Sanctions on Syria

BAGHDAD, May 17 – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, participated on Friday in the 34th Arab League Summit held in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, where he emphasized the need for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and welcomed the lifting of international sanctions on Syria.

“There can be no more occupation — a sovereign Palestinian state must be established,” President Hassan Sheikh declared while addressing Arab leaders gathered at the summit. He underscored Somalia’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause amid escalating tensions in the region.

The president also expressed Somalia’s solidarity with the Syrian government, applauding steps taken to ease the sanctions previously imposed on the country.

“We welcome the lifting of sanctions on Syria,” he stated, aligning his message with the position of several Arab nations seeking to reintegrate Syria into the regional diplomatic landscape.

President Hassan Sheikh’s remarks come at a time when Arab leaders are attempting to set aside their differences to forge a unified stance on longstanding regional issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Syria’s evolving role within the Arab world.
